New organisation for deaf women in the southeast

KILKENNY ADVERTISER, OCTOBER 09, 2008.

By Naoise Coogan

A group of women from the south-east region have come together to form the South East Deaf Women’s Group.

The innovative troop met in the Ormonde Hotel in Kilkenny on Saturday night last, where the deputy Mayor, Betty Manning, officially launched the group.

Approximately 60 women came together to create the forum which they hope will have far-reaching effects on services for deaf people in the future.

Speaking at the event, Betty Manning said that it was important to raise the profile of people who live amongst us with the many challenges that being deaf can bring.

“Launching a group like this always benefits others, and in the long term, educates other people who haven’t had first-hand experience of dealing with somebody with a hearing problem. It is important to use the group to highlight the issues and to let people know that being deaf does not change the person you are and does not hinder you from being deeply involved in the community and in active citizenship.

She added, “a group or organisation does give us a louder voice, a greater opportunity to be heard, gives energy to new ideas, and of course, there is always a great social side to being part of a group.”

Cllr Manning wished the group the best for the future.
